VIC: Richardsons Bend – Murray River Off Grid Camp Spot (Big Rig Friendly & 3 Hours from Melbourne)
If you’re chasing a Murray River off grid camp spot that’s peaceful, family-friendly, and big rig approved — Richardsons Bend should be on your list. Just over 3 hours from Melbourne and not far from Albury-Wodonga, this spot is perfect for those travelling in a bus, caravan, or trailer setup who want to get off the beaten track and reconnect with nature.
🚌 Big Rig Friendly with Easy Access
We camped at Richardsons Bend in April last year and had no trouble getting our big setup in — we’re talking bus plus trailer, total 19m long, and there was plenty of room to park and turn around.
The last few kilometres are dirt road, but don’t let that scare you. The tracks were freshly graded after the floods, and despite what some old Wikicamps reviews say, they were in good nick.
There is a small bridge just before the campground. If you’re in a bigger rig, just take it slow and steady — no worries.
🏞 Sandy Beaches & River Fun for the Kids
A short walk from camp takes you down to the river, where there are a few sandy beach spots that the kids absolutely loved. It’s shallow enough for splashing and swimming, with shady areas nearby for relaxing or having a picnic.
This is one of those rare places where the whole family can slow down, unplug, and enjoy the simple things — sun, water, dirt, and fresh air.
🔥 It’s Off Grid – So Come Prepared
This is proper off grid free camping, so make sure you’re fully stocked before heading out:
• 🔋 Charged batteries or solar
• 🚰 Plenty of drinking water
• 🔥 Firewood (there’s not much around)
• 🗑️ Rubbish bags — leave no trace
It’s likely to be busier during school holidays or long weekends, so if you’re after peace and quiet, aim for a mid-week trip.
Why We Love It
• ✅ Off grid camp 3 hours from Melbourne
• ✅ On the banks of the Murray River
• ✅ Big rig friendly (we took a 19m setup)
• ✅ Free camping with no crowds midweek
• ✅ Kids loved the beach and river access
Whether you’re travelling full-time or just sneaking away for a few nights, Richardsons Bend is one of our favourite off grid camps in VIC.
